The Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee reviews maternal deaths, studies the incidence of pregnancy complications, and makes recommendations to improve maternal outcomes and prevent mortality.
In 1997, the DPH Commissioner appointed a Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (MMMRC) to review maternal deaths, study the incidence of pregnancy complications, and make recommendations to improve maternal outcomes and prevent mortality. The Committee was created under Massachusetts Law, G.L. c. 111, Section 24O to review all pregnancy-associated deaths, including deaths up to one year after pregnancy. Below are key definitions that the Committee refers to in their reviews:
- Pregnancy-associated deaths: Death during or within 1 year of pregnancy, regardless of the cause (i.e., someone dies in a car crash and they happen to be pregnant)
- Pregnancy-related deaths: Death during or within 1 year of pregnancy, from a pregnancy complication, a chain of events initiated by pregnancy, or the aggravation of an unrelated condition by the physiologic effects of pregnancy (i.e., post-partum hemorrhage)
