“ACCESSIBLE” GAS APPLIANCE SHUT-OFF VALVES
The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters (“Board”) has voted to interpret the following section of NFPA 54-2012 edition with regards to a residential free standing kitchen stove:
9.6.4 Appliance Shutoff Valves and Connections.
Each appliance connected to a piping system shall have an accessible, approved
manual shutoff valve with a non-displaceable valve member, or a listed gas convenience
outlet. Appliance shutoff valves and convenience outlets shall serve a single appliance only and shall be installed in accordance with 126.96.36.199.
The manual shutoff valve installed behind a free standing kitchen stove is considered by the Board to be accessible.
