CPVC in 6 Story Buildings

BOARD INTERPRETATION
CPVC USE IN BUILDING 6 STORIES OR 60 FEET HIGH
(enacted 05-28-2014)

  1. Introduction

The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters (“Board”) has voted to interpret the language of 248 CMR 10.06 (2) (m) (5):

CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) pipe and fittings may be used in the following situations provided that none of this material is located within 24 inches of any connection to a hot water tank:

  1. for hot and cold water distribution that is located only in the dwelling portion of a residential dwelling, multiple family dwelling, hotel, motel, inn, condominium and similar building six stories or 60 feet in height 
  1. Interpretation

The Board interprets that CPVC may be used in this application if the building is six stories high as stated on the building permit, even if the building is higher than 60 feet

  1. Rationale     

      A six story building might be 65 feet high but still listed on the building permit as a six story building
