BOARD INTERPRETATION
METAL TAG REQUIREMENTS FOR WATER HEATERS
(enacted 12-03-2012)
1. Introduction
The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters (“Board”) has voted to interpret the language of Chapter 142, Section 17 of the Massachusetts General Laws stating:
Water tanks, plainly marked by the manufacturer, by stamping into the metal of the tank, or on a metal plate permanently attached to the tank, in a conspicuous place.
2. Interpretation
The metal foil tag attach to most water heaters meet these requirements.
3. Rationale
Most manufacturers now affix a foil tag permanently to the outside jacket of their water heaters in lieu of attaching it to the actual vessel itself.
