The purpose of 524 CMR is to ensure the safety of elevator equipment across the Commonwealth by promulgating rules concerning the construction, installation, alteration and operation of all elevators including the location, design, and construction of shafts or enclosures for elevators, safety devices, gates and other safeguards which are subject to a permitting and inspection process necessary for public health and safety. 524 CMR 1.00 defines the scope of these regulations.
