Special Investigations Unit

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigates complaints or allegations of misconduct by various licensed and unlicensed insurance professionals and companies. The SIU works to ensure that agents, advisors, insurance companies, and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) follow all insurance rules and laws. When appropriate, they recommend taking legal action.

The SIU's investigations involve finding and documenting evidence to support claims of unfair business practices, deceptive acts, or other violations of insurance laws. They get these tips from the public, other state and federal agencies, and various sections within the Division of Insurance. Investigations by the SIU can lead to several types of enforcement actions, including:

  • Cease and desist orders
  • Compliance programs
  • License sanctions
  • Fines and penalties

If the SIU finds evidence of criminal activity, they will report it to the appropriate law enforcement.  SIU also reports their actions to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) online database, which regulators in other states can use. These actions are also put on the Division's website.
