The MassDOT Aeronautics Drone Operations Program uses Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS, or drones) to support state and local agencies, municipalities, and quasi-governmental entities, primarily working with MassDOT and the MBTA.
The Drone Operations Program provides services such as assessing and inspecting critical state infrastructure, including:
- roads
- bridges
- airports
- rail and transit facilities
The Drone Operations Program optimizes its services by leveraging a Data and Analytics Team, turning collected drone imagery into useful data and actionable information for public transportation stakeholders and decision-makers, and planning information technology infrastructure for large-scale projects. The Drone Operations Program also promotes data collection, analysis, and sharing amongst MassDOT agencies.
The Drone Operations Program also uses drones to:
- Document aircraft accidents
- Respond to natural disasters
- Monitor construction projects
- Participate in state and local emergency drills
Informed by innovation, collaboration, and expertise, the Drone Operations Program aims to facilitate the adoption of drones by MassDOT and the MBTA across the Commonwealth in a safe, cost-effective, and secure manner. We partner with industry and academia to find novel ways to use technology to help solve transportation challenges.
