Artificial Reefs

The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) develops, manages, and monitors artificial reef deployments in state waters.

Artificial reefs are intentionally placed structures that provide additional habitat for fish. The increase in habitat availability increases fishery production and provides opportunities for recreational fishing. That is why DMF created an artificial reef program, which:

  • Plans and develops artificial reefs
  • Monitors those reefs
  • Ensures the reefs follow interstate and national standards

This benefits marine resources while avoiding adversity to fisheries resources and habitats. DMF is also working on a site selection model to identify locations where placing new reefs won't conflict with existing uses.
