Department of Mental Health (DMH) Ombudsman

DMH Office of the Ombudsman

Welcome to the Department of Mental Health (DMH) Office of the Ombudsman. The DMH Ombudsman assists individuals having difficulty resolving problems with DMH services.  The Office of the Ombudsman cannot assist with obtaining DMH or other mental health services and it's not a replacement for DMH’s Office of Investigations or other complaint resolution mechanisms. Rather, the Ombudsman acts on behalf of the Commissioner to help solve problems that are causing delays or disruption in DMH services.

  • If you are looking to obtain mental health services or supports, or if you need assistance with a mental health emergency/crisis, call or text the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Helpline - 833-773-2445. Available 24/7. You can chat online with a representative online at https://www.masshelpline.com/
  • If you are having a problem with DMH services or a DMH service provider that you have not been able to resolve, you are encouraged to call or email the Office of the Ombudsman.  We will respond to your call or email promptly and will try to assist you. Email the Ombudsman at DMHOmbudsman@mass.gov or call (617) 626-4840.
  • If you have a complaint about your DMH services and you believe your rights have been violated, you can file a complaint with the DMH Office of Investigations (download the complaint form) or call the Office of Investigations directly at (617) 626-8154.
  • If you have general questions about DMH services, obtaining services or about a DMH service provider, please email or call DMH Info at dmhinfo@massmail.state.ma.us or (800) 221-0053
