Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)

What is EEE?

Eastern Equine Encephalitis is a virus spread by a bite from an infected mosquito. It is one of the most deadly mosquito-born diseases in the U.S. - nearly 33% of people who become infected die from the virus.

Signs and Symptoms

Many people infected with EEE don't have any apparent illness. Severe cases of EEE can bring about symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • High fever
  • Vomiting
  • Chills

If untreated, these can progress further and result in:

  • Disorientation
  • Seizures
  • A coma

Treatments

There are no specific treatments for EEE. Medical care is usually based on the symptoms that the victim is displaying.

There is no preventable drug or vaccine available for EEE.

Who is at risk?

EEE can infect people of all ages, but people over 50 or under 15 years of age are more likely to develop severe symptoms.
