Learn about interest income you may receive on child support

If you receive interest income from child support, there may be possible tax consequences.

We will send you a 1099-INT in January if we collected and sent you $600 or more in interest payments between January 1st and December 31st in the previous year.

A 1099-INT form lets you know the amount of interest we will report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Interest that is sent to you is considered income for tax purposes. We report the interest to the IRS when the interest we sent you is $600 or more during the last calendar year.

Generally, we put the 1099-INT form in the mail by January 31st of each year, but if that day is a Saturday or Sunday, we have until the next Monday to mail the forms.

You should give the 1099-INT form to the person who prepares your taxes.

Filing your taxes

If you want to file your taxes before we mail the 1099-INT form in late January, you can see the total amount of interest we have collected and sent to you in the last calendar year by checking the Case Manager after the first week of January.

Whether you owe taxes for previous years depends on your particular tax situation. All interest is considered income for tax purposes. If you have questions about interest income or the 1099-INT form, you should talk to your tax advisor.
