Currently MET can  accept checks or gifts from Donor Advised Funds. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

The Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET) is a state trust operated within the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. It is established to receive funding from individuals, foundations, corporations, as well as through wills and bequests.

Donation Policy!

By donating to the Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET), you agree to the following terms and conditions:  

  1. All donations (“Gifts”) made to MET are charitable contributions. No goods or services will be provided in exchange for any donation. 
  2. All donations are irrevocable once made. 
  3. Donations may be used by MET for any lawful purpose consistent with its enabling legislation, trust declaration, mission, or policies, in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 
  4. MET does not provide financial, legal, or tax advice. Donors are responsible for consulting with a qualified advisor regarding their donation and for ensuring proper reporting to the Internal Revenue Service. 
  5. Under Massachusetts law (G.L. c. 268A), in order to maintain transparency, donations or agreements involving public entities may be publicly disclosed to ensure compliance with the law and avoid any perception of conflict. 
  6. These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and any disputes shall be resolved exclusively in its courts.

Donor Advised Fund (DAF) Grant Recommendation Instructions

To recommend a grant to the Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET), please use your DAF sponsoring organization's online portal or grant recommendation form. The processing of the grant is managed entirely by your DAF provider (e.g., Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, Bank of America).   

Please provide your DAF sponsor with the following required information to ensure the grant is processed correctly:

    • Note: Include "EEA" or "c/o Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs" if the DAF form requires a department or a care-of name.
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN): 04-6002284
    • Crucial Note for DAF Sponsors: MET is a state trust and a governmental unit of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. State agencies often share a common tax ID. This EIN is shared by the Commonwealth and may appear in the IRS database under the name of the University of Massachusetts Lowell or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts itself, but it is the correct Federal Tax ID for MET.

Grant Purpose

  • Use of Funds: Unless a specific restricted use has been agreed upon by MET in advance, please instruct your DAF sponsor to grant the funds for MET’s general charitable purposes in support of marine and freshwater species conservation, habitat protection, and environmental education.

Terms and Conditions for Donor Advised Fund (DAF) Grants

By recommending a grant to the Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET) through your Donor Advised Fund (DAF), you acknowledge and agree to the following terms and conditions:

  1. DAF Compliance and Donor Benefits
    • Per Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations, no goods, services, or private benefits, including but not limited to tickets, meals, or other donor benefits, may be exchanged for the DAF contribution.
    • The grant may not be used to satisfy any personal pledge, obligation, or debt of the donor.
  2. Fund Use and Irrevocability
    • Unless otherwise directed and agreed upon by MET, all grants will be applied to MET’s general charitable purposes in support of marine and freshwater species conservation, habitat protection, and environmental education.
    • All approved grants are irrevocable once made to MET.
  3. Legal and Regulatory Compliance
    • All contributions must comply with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing charitable donations and Donor Advised Funds.
    • Grants may be used by MET for any lawful purpose consistent with its enabling legislation, trust declaration, mission, or policies, in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  4. Transparency and Governing Law
    • As a state trust within the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws (G.L. c. 268A), agreements and donations involving MET may be publicly disclosed to ensure transparency and avoid any perceived conflict of interest.
    • These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and any disputes shall be resolved exclusively in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
    • A donor may be required to sign a separate Gift Agreement for grants to ensure compliance.
