The Senior SAFE Program provides grants to local fire departments to support fire and safety education to seniors, who are at the highest risk of dying in fire in the Commonwealth.
Some of the fire and burns risks for seniors include cooking, smoking, home oxygen use, electrical and heating dangers. In addition, this program aims to improve the safety of senior housing. Programs may include the installation of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, testing and replacing batteries, the installation and checking of house numbers, high end heating limiting devices on stoves, in-hood stove fire extinguishers, and nightlights. In addition to installing any of these important safety measures, education specific to their circumstances is a crucial component of improving the safety of seniors at home.
The Senior SAFE Program creates partnerships between seniors and fire departments through established providers of senior support services such as your local Council on Aging or Senior Center and the Visiting Nurse Association, as well as others.
