Who is a mandated reporter of elder abuse?

Certain medical and other professionals are required to report elder abuse if they encounter it as part of their job.

Massachusetts law requires mandated reporters to report suspected abuse to the Elder Protective Services program. Elder Protective Services can only investigate cases of abuse where the person is age 60 and over and lives in the community.

Elder abuse includes: physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, caretaker neglect, financial exploitation and self-neglect.

Mandated reporters who fail to report elder abuse may be subject to a fine.
