Siting Clean Energy at Closed Landfills

Massachusetts encourages the "recycling" of old landfills into renewable energy facilities.

The Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) issues post-closure use permits for solar and wind installations on closed and capped landfills. To date, the agency has approved more than 100 projects rated in excess of 220 megawatts. A majority of these projects have been completed and are generating nearly 175 megawatts of renewable energy.
