The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) proposes to reconstruct the existing Route 38 (Main Street) roadway between the intersection of Route 38 and Route 62 to the Woburn city line for a total project length of approximately 2.1 miles.

Wilmington - Reconstruction of Route 38 (Main Street) from Route 62 intersection to Woburn City Line
This project will provide:
- A safer and continuous connection for pedestrians and bicyclists along the Route 38 corridor.
- Improved traffic flow along the corridor and shorter delays and queues at the intersections.
- Improvements to the existing closed drainage system and anew water system along Route 38 from Route 62 to Eames Street.
- Utility upgrades and improvements along the corridor including overhead line relocations, a new water main, upgraded gas lines, and underground telecommunication.
Project benefits
- Improving existing stormwater infrastructure and water quality along the Route 38 corridor.
- Improving existing closed drainage system, includingheadwall and culvert replacement.
- Installing a new water system along Route 38 from Route62 to Eames Street.
- Avoiding negative impacts to the existing floodplain and drainage patterns by adding compensatory flood storage and wetland replication areas.
Safety improvements
- Providing a safe and efficient alternative transportation resource for residents and commuters.
- Providing bicycle and pedestrian access to the MBTA Wilmington commuter rail station, local neighborhoods, recent residential developments, and the Ventile Farm recreational facility.
- Signalizing and improving the side street approaches at the intersection of Route 38 with Cross Street and Butters Row, increasing visibility and pedestrian safety.
- Replacing the structurally deficient Bridge No. W-38-011, that carries Route 38 over Maple Meadow Brook.
Project impacts & mitigation
- Approximately 3,300 square feet of permanent wetland impacts which will be mitigated withthe proposed 3,510 square foot replication area
- Approximately 120 square feet of permanent waterway impacts
- Approximately 3,900 cubic feet of fill within floodplain, compensated for with an approximately 4,200 cubic feet compensatory flood storage area
- Temporary impacts due to construction activities. Temporary impacts to resources areas will be restored upon completion of work.
