How to Apply for a Discharge Upgrade

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Veterans can apply for a discharge upgrade or correction. Those applications accepted & receiving a status upgrade are eligible for VA benefits earned during their service. Veterans have a strong case for an upgrade if a discharge was connected to: - Mental health conditions, PTSD; - Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); - Sexual assault or harassment; - Sexual orientation (including under the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy). HUD-VASH Vouchers

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless Veterans with case management & clinical services provided by the VA. The VA provides these services for participating Veterans at VA medical centers (VAMCs), community-based outreach clinics (CBOCs), through VA contractors, or through other VA designated entities.
