Environmental, Social, and Governance at MassDOT

Helping MassDOT deliver on transportation outcomes.

At MassDOT, we believe that transportation is important for what it does (allows people to access destinations and opportunities), not for what it is (pavement and vehicles). People—and the quality of travel that all of us experience—are at the center of all our work. The Environmental, Social, and Governance team, located within MassDOT's Office of Transportation Planning (OTP), focuses on transportation vulnerability and security, destination accessibility, and land use and housing.

Many of our planning studies center these themes as primary goals of the work, and we are committed to leveraging as many tools, datasets, public outreach and engagement resources, and other opportunities as possible to further the usefulness of our transportation network for as many people as possible, with special consideration towards communities that are particularly vulnerable and reliant on our services.

Transportation Vulnerability and Security

Identifying communities that are particularly vulnerable to changes in transportation services and infrastructure, including access to the network and services. Exploring issues that lead to or are worsened by transportation vulnerability, including affordability.

Destination Accessibility

Gathering data and developing resources that reflect existing or future conditions about the places that people can reach via the transportation network infrastructure and services, and exploring access issues related to specific destinations, travel patterns, or outcomes.

Land Use and Housing

Exploring ways to coordinate between land use and transportation policy.
