Chelmsford - Bridge Replacement Gorham Street over I-495 and Westford street over I-495

Purpose:

The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed BRIDGE REPLACEMENT, C-08-039, GORHAM STREET (ST 3A) OVER I-495 AND REPLACEMENT OF C-08-036, WESTFORD STREET OVER I-495 (DB) project. All views and comments submitted in response to the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The proposed project consists of the removal and replacement of Bridges Numbers C‐08‐036 (2LQ) and C-08-039 (C8V) over Interstate 495. The existing bridges, along with piers and abutments will be replaced in kind. A minimum vertical clearance of 16'‐6" will be provided over Interstate 495, and allowance for potential future I-495 widening will be provided in the median area. The bridges will maintain the existing footprint and the cross sections will provide two (2) 5.5'‐6’ sidewalks, two (2) 11'-13.5’ travel lanes, and two 6'-7’ shoulders. The approach roadway profiles will be adjusted to accommodate the raised profile of the bridges. Work on the approach roadways will include guardrail replacements, ADA curb ramp installation, pavement restoration, markings, and drainage improvements. Bicycle accommodation consisting of usable shoulders on both sides of each bridge roadway has been provided in accordance with applicable design guides.

A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT’s policy concerning land acquisitions will be presented in the hearing.
