Forest Management PreHarvest Tour 9/22/2022

DCR Foresters will be leading tours of prepared forest management areas, discussing goals and objectives, silvicultural techniques, providing a view of the project area, and explaining how the operations will take place.  A detailed silviculture prescription for each operation will be provided to attendees.  These tours culminate a public process that included public meetings and a written comment period on each project.

This tour will follow current state and local requirements concerning COVID 19.

The tours will be conducted rain or shine as indicated below.  Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather and to wear sturdy shoes.  Walking within these project areas may be difficult due to fallen trees, rocks, and other obstacles.  For additional information about the tours and DCR forest management on State Forests, Parks, and Reservations, please contact Tom Brulé, Management Forestry Program Supervisor, at 413-545-3891 or thomas.brule@mass.gov.

Thursday September 22^nd, 2022, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Peru State Forest, Middlefield and Peru

DCR Management Forester Kristopher Massini will lead a tour of the Pease-Curtin Ash Removal Project a 92 -acre planned forest management project addressing the roadside treatment of ash. 

Meet at the intersection of Curtin Road and Garnet Hill Road in the Peru State Forest; Attendees will then walk within the project area to view the planned operation.  This tour will involve approximately 1-2 miles of walking on/off road.  Attendees should be prepared to be away from their vehicles for an extended amount of time and distance for this tour.

• From Peru Center – Travel east on Rt 143 for 1.0 mile to Curtin Road. Turn south on Curtin Road continuing to intersection with Garnet Hill Road for 3.3 miles. 
• From Middlefield Center – Travel east on Bell Road for approximately 0.8 miles taking a slight left on to Arthur Pease Road.  Continue north on Arthur Pease Road for 3.0 miles to intersection with Garnet Hill Road. (Arthur Pease Road changed to Curtin Road at the town line)

Other routes are not suggested due to poor road conditions and closed gates, please do not follow GPS recommendations which do not use the above routes.
