NOU LA PI RÈD: RE-ENVISIONINGSOCIAL ADVOCACY THROUGHMENTAL HEALTH CONSCIOUSNESS
The power of advocacy continues to manifest in Haiti despite a series of national lockdowns (“peyilòk”), political unrest, social insecurity, natural disasters, and community violence. Mental health remains central to Haitians attempting to move from a lifestyle of surviving to thriving. This presentation will focus on the development of a series of community-based mental health literacy workshops as a form of social activism. It will describe collective social efforts to address mental health, re-conceptualizing a new paradigm shift inclusive of the Haitian spirit to overcome difficult times. Combined with resiliency, the incorporation of culturally informed, practical strategies to uplift Haitian spirits through social advocacy and mental wellness is necessary.
