Overview

DMF held a river herring counting workshop in Gloucester in 2005 on volunteer visual counting methods that ushered in contemporary river herring monitoring in Massachusetts. Much information has been collected and lessons learned. Now DMF will host a workshop on March 12, 2025, in New Bedford to report on the 20 years of monitoring. The workshop will focus on volunteer visual counts in the morning and electronic and video counting technologies in the afternoon.
The workshop is open to professional and volunteer herring counting practitioners. Please contact John Sheppard at john.sheppard@mass.gov for more information and to register.
