Whales in Motion
Overview
Join Sound Explorations for a one-day, special, interactive exhibit celebrating Massachusetts Right Whale Day at Boston’s Museum of Science. Students who are blind and visually impaired are invited to experience the locomotion and foraging behavior of Humpback and North Atlantic Right whales through 3-d sculpture models with musicians performing live.
As students run their hand across these sculpture models, a musician performs action-specific melodies that match the same contour and shape of the model. Textures and shapes on the sculpture model and music illustrate fluke motion, side-roll orientation, swimming direction, and lob tail activity. Throughout the exhibit experience, students will meet with NOAA whale researchers to learn about these magnificent whales found right off our coast of Massachusetts. Students will also have an opportunity to create their own sculpture models using our Animal Motion Path Makers, and then have musicians perform their whale motion paths as melodic lines.
Reserve private access to this exhibit for your students who are blind and visually impaired. This event and access to the Museum exhibits are free for all attending students and teachers.
