Family Leave to Bond With a Child

Paid time off when you need it most.

Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) provides time to recover from birth, bond with a new child in your family, or care for a loved one with a serious health condition. Eligible parents or guardians of any gender identity may take this leave, including foster and adoptive parents.

What type of paid leave should I apply for?  

There are 2 main categories of paid leave: Family Leave and Medical Leave. If you are a birthing person you may qualify for both Family and Medical Leave, but there are other types of leave available in these categories. Explore which type of leave is right for you. 

Transitioning from medical leave to family leave to bond with a child 

If you are pregnant, you could qualify for both Medical Leave for a serious health condition, including recovery from childbirth, and Family Leave to bond with a child, which is sometimes called maternity or parental leave
