This guide details MassDOT’s experience with the MassTrails pilot program counters, outlines best practices learned from peer agencies around the country, and serves as a primer for those who wish to install their own bicycle and pedestrian counters on shared use paths. Although this primer focuses on performing bicycle and pedestrian counts on shared-use paths, the processes outlined here can be implemented for other facility types as well.
