Gambling is when you risk something of value, and you don’t know if you will win or lose. When most people think of gambling, they think of slot machines, casinos, and sports betting. But it’s also playing bingo, buying lottery or scratch tickets, even betting on office pools—all of these are forms of gambling.

When does gambling become a problem?

Gambling can become a serious problem, and recognizing the problem is the first step to getting help. Have you or a loved one ever:

  • Gotten defensive when asked about gambling?
  • Tried and failed many times to cut down or stop gambling?
  • Spent a lot of time thinking about gambling?
  • Gambled when feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed?
  • Gambled to try to win back money previously lost by gambling?
  • Lied to hide how much or often they gamble?
  • Lost an important relationship, job, or opportunity because of gambling?
