What you need   for Apply for a Journeyman Pipefitter License

To complete an application, enter all required information and attach the following documents: 

  • A copy of a high school diploma or equivalent certification
  • A 2" x 2" passport-style photo
  • Proof of requisite education and employment hours as described below:

EITHER

  1. Provide documentation from employer that you have worked not less than 6,000 hours in Massachusetts as a duly licensed OPSI Pipefitter Apprentice under a Massachusetts Master Pipefitter.
  2. Documentation from an approved school that you have completed 350 hours of A.S.M.E Code instruction.

OR

  1. Provide documentation from employer that you have worked not less than 4,000 hours in Massachusetts as a duly licensed OPSI Pipefitter Apprentice under a Massachusetts Master Pipefitter.
  2. Provide documentation from an approved school that you have completed 200 hours of A.S.M.E Code instruction.
  3. Documentation from an approved school that you have successfully completed 500 hours of study in a pipefitter's course, of which 250 hours of practical, shop-related work.

OR

  1. Provide documentation from employer that you have worked not less than 2,000 hours in Massachusetts as a duly licensed OPSI Pipefitter Apprentice under a Massachusetts Master Pipefitter.
  2. Provide documentation from an approved school that you have completed 200 hours of A.S.M.E Code instruction.
  3. Provide documentation from an approved school that you have successfully completed 1000 hours of study in a pipefitter's course, of which 700 hours of practical, shop-related work.

OR

  1. Provide documentation from out-of-state employer listing work experience and certification requirements that are equivalent to the Journeyman Pipefitter prerequisites listed above. 
  2. Provide a Certificate of Good Standing, if available. 
  3. Be approved by a majority vote of the Bureau.

Fees   for Apply for a Journeyman Pipefitter License

Active military members, their spouses & military veterans may qualify for fee-reduction benefits under the Valor Act. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. All money orders must be signed and dated.

Online applications can be submitted through the My License portal.

Next steps   for Apply for a Journeyman Pipefitter License

  1. Get the Bureau's Approval to Take the Journeyman Pipefitters Exam

    Applicants will be notified by mail approximately four (4) to eight (8) weeks after receipt of application by the Office of Public Safety & Inspections (OPSI). Examinations are held as applications are received (first come, first served).

  2. Take the Exam

    You will receive in the mail a Notice to Appear at an examination site. After your exam, your scores will be available within a week's time on the OPSI website

    If you don't earn a passing score, you must reapply to take the exam. Exam study materials can be found here

  3. Get your License

    If you pass the examination, your license will arrive in the mail in approximately 2-3 weeks.

This license allows the holder to perform pipefitting work subject to inspection under any law, ordinance, by-law, rule or regulation but does not employ other Journeymen or Master Pipefitters.

Incomplete applications will not be scheduled for examination until all missing documentation is submitted.

Important Information if you Employ or Plan to Employ an Apprentice

A Pipefitter Apprentice must be licensed with the OPSI, must hold a valid registration with the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, and must be employed by a Massachusetts Master Pipefitter for the duration of their apprenticeship. A Journeyman Pipefitter can supervise the work of the Pipefitter Apprentice, but the work hours will only be accepted while registered with the DAS, licensed with the OPSI, and under the employment of the Master Pipefitter.
