What you need
To complete an application, enter all required information and attach the following documents:
- A copy of your high school diploma or equivalent certification.
- A 2" x 2" passport-style photo (Unless authorization for release of RMV photo information is signed-off)
- A copy of your Universal CFC Certification
- Proof of requisite education and employment hours as described below:
EITHER
- Provide documentation from employer that you have worked not less than 6,000 hours in Massachusetts as a duly licensed OPSI Refrigeration Apprentice under a Massachusetts Refrigeration Contactor.
- Provide documentation from an approved school that you have completed Not less than 450 hours of study.
OR
- Provide a copy of refrigeration technician’s license, master technician's license or equivalent license from another jurisdiction.
- Provide documentation from employer listing work experience and certification requirements that are equivalent to the Refrigeration Technician Prerequisites listed above, in accordance with 528 CMR 11.03.
- Be approved by a majority vote of the Bureau.
Fees
Active military members, their spouses & military veterans may qualify for fee-reduction benefits under the Valor Act. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. All money orders must be signed and dated.

Get the Bureau's approval to take the Refrigeration Apprentice exam
Applicants will be notified by email approximately four (4) to eight (8) weeks after receipt of application by the Office of Public Safety & Inspections (OPSI). Examinations are held as applications are received (first come, first served).
Take the exam
You will receive a Notice to Appear by email with the date, time, and location of your examination. After you complete the examination, your score will be available on the OPSI website within approximately one week on the OPSI website.
If you don't earn a passing score, you must reapply to take the exam. Exam guidance materials can be found on the Recommended exam study materials (Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians, Sprinkler Fitters) page.
Get your license
If you pass the examination, your license will be sent to you by email.

This license is required for anyone who performs refrigeration work having a capacity over 10 tons in the aggregate.

Incomplete applications will not be scheduled for examination until all missing documentation is submitted.
Important Information if you Employ or Plan to Employ an Apprentice
A Refrigeration Apprentice must be licensed with the OPSI, must hold a valid registration with the Division of Apprentice Standards, and must be employed by a Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor for the duration of their apprenticeship. A Refrigeration Technician can supervise the work of the Refrigeration Apprentice, but the work hours will only be accepted while registered with the DAS, licensed with the OPSI, and under the employment of the Refrigeration Contractor.
