What you need for Apply for an Oil Burner Technician or Apprentice Certificate
The Oil Burner Technician Certificate allows the holder to service, install and repair oil burners that burn fuel oil and associated equipment. Applicants must pass a written exam to show knowledge of:
- Oil burners and associated equipment
- 527 CMR 1.00
- Industry safety devices
- Automatic, pneumatic and electronic controls
- Pipefitting and heating systems
The Oil Burner Apprentice Certificate allows the holder to work under the supervision of a licensed Oil Burner Technician. It is for people entering the oil burner trade.
Requirements:
- 18 years of age
- Pass written exam (There is no exam for the Oil Burner Apprentice certificate.)

Applying for an Oil Burner Technician or Apprentice License
Submit the complete application with:
- Application Fee
- One (1) passport-style color photo (2 inches x 2 inches)
- Massachusetts residents can allow DFS to use their RMV photo instead of submitting a photo
- Proof of age (legible copy of current driver's license)
Incomplete applications will be returned to you.
Oil Burner Technician Exam
After we receive your complete application, we register you for the next exam.
You must pass the exam to become a licensed Oil Burner Technician in Massachusetts.
You may request special accommodations for exams. The request must be submitted with your application.
There is no exam for the Oil Burner Apprentice License.
Renewal of an Oil Burner Technician or Apprentice License
If you need a renewal application, please call 978-567-3780.
Licenses are good for two years.
We mail you a renewal application 60 days before your license expires. (If you do not receive the application, contact our office.)
Submit the complete application and fee 30 days before your license expires.
There is no exam for renewal.
