What you need

To renew or apply for a license:

To sell firearms, ammunition, or to be a gunsmith you must apply for a license. Applications must be submitted to the police department where your shop or club is located.

You can now apply Online via the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal.

To apply, you will need to submit:

  • A completed license to sell firearms application
  • The required application fee
  • Complete the Firearms Dealer Online Training course
  • A form of identification
  • Additional documentation as required by your local licensing authority

Fees

* Gunsmith license has no fee if applicant has a license to sell, rent, or lease firearms.
** License to sell ammunition is only available to gun clubs or ranges.

You can now apply Online via the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal. If you apply online, contact your licensing authority to arrange payment.

For dealer, ammunition, and gunsmith license new and renewal applications:

Your complete application package, including fee, may be brought to your local licesing authority. Contact your local firearms licensing officer for additional information prior to submitting your application.

Processing of new and renewal applications includes a state and federal background check, a fingerprint based background check, and a check with the Department of Mental Health

You will be ocntacted by your local licensing authority when your license or renewal has been processed and is available for pickup.

If you submitted an application through the MIRCS Unified Portal, you can check the status of your application in your account.
