What you need for Order replacement vehicle license plates
To replace your vehicle's license plate with the SAME plate number, you will need your:
- Vehicle license plate number
- Owner information
- Vehicle information
- Payment
If one or both plates were reported stolen, you must get a new set of plates (with new number) from an RMV Service Center.
If one plate is missing or damaged, you can order a replacement plate online with same number.
Fees for Order replacement vehicle license plates
If your vehicle failed inspection for an illegible plate there is no fee to replace.

How to order Order replacement vehicle license plates
You can order most replacement plates online.
NOTE: You can only order either a front or back plate online, not both.
You can order replacement plates by calling the RMV's Contact Center at 857-368-8000 (from the 339/617/781/857 area codes or from outside of MA) or 800-858-3926 (from all other MA area codes). Select the Registration Support option.
You will need your:
- Vehicle registration number
- Owner and vehicle information
- Applicable fee
If one or both plates were reported stolen, you must visit an RMV Service Center.

Plate Permit
The RMV will issue you a Plate Permit to keep in your vehicle until the plates arrive. The replacement plates will be mailed to your address on record.
You can use the Plate Permit for an inspection if needed.
If you lose your front license plate, you must create a temporary license plate displaying the plate number and attach it to the front of the vehicle. The temporary plate must also conform to the requirements for regular number plates.
If you lose your rear license plate, you must attach the front license plate to the rear of the vehicle and also request a replacement expiration decal. You must also create a temporary license plate displaying the plate number and attach it to the front of the vehicle.

If you need a replacement decal (sticker) for your license plate, visit an RMV Service Center with your current registration.
