What you need

In special circumstances, trial jurors can request a change in court location, called a hardship transfer. Grand jurors can't change court locations, since the grand jury meets in only 1 location in each county. Hardship transfers are only granted in very limited circumstances in order to keep the sample of summoned jurors random at each court. Inconvenience, time, and distance to the courthouse aren't eligible hardships.

If you're eligible for a change in court location, you may be required to appear on a different date from the original date on your summons, depending on the needs of the court. You can request a hardship transfer online or by mail.

How to request

To a request a hardship transfer online, visit the Massachusetts Juror Service website and choose a court to transfer to from the drop-down menu under "Location." If the court you want isn’t listed, it's not available. You'll need to provide a brief explanation of your hardship as well.

To a request a hardship transfer by mail, fill in the circle to the right of the court name you'd like to be transferred to in section 3 on your Juror Confirmation Form. If the court you want isn’t listed, it's not available. You'll need to provide a brief explanation of your hardship as well. Mail the form to the address listed.
