1. What to Know

   An outdoor hydronic heater (wood-fired boiler) may be sold and installed in Massachusetts only if:

   • The unit meets 2015 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) new source performance standard (NSPS) certification requirements, and 
   • The manufacturer has filed a compliance certification with MassDEP.

2. Review the Instructions

   Learn about your environmental obligations and how to complete your compliance certification.

   A manufacturer may certify at any point after a model has been tested by an approved lab, reviewed by EPA’s Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) group, and is in compliance with the applicable state requirements
