The Details

What you need

Multi-factor authentication is a process in which a customer associates their email, phone number, or authentication service to their online myRMV account to protect their identity. See below if you are locked out of your account or do not have multi-factor authentication set up.

Fees

There is no fee for this transaction.

How to update

Existing customers who do not have multi-factor authentication set up will need to request a letter ID on the new Identity Verification Screen on Mass.Gov/myRMV. A myRMV Verification Letter with the ID will be mailed to your mailing address on file in 5-7 days.

A myRMV Verification Letter will be automatically generated for new customers with any of the following in-person Service Center transactions:

Creating a new License/ID Account
Creating a new Liquor ID Account
Permit and Driver’s License Issuance
Mass ID Issuance
Liquor ID Issuance
License Fees Collected
Instructor License Issued
School Bus Credential Issued
7D License Issued
CDL Downgrade
Out of State Conversion
Quick Duplicate Issuance

Any customer who doesn’t have multi-factor authentication and doesn’t want to wait to get the letter in the mail after using the online process can request the letter be printed in a Service Center (this cannot be done at AAA locations). You must request the letter ID online before it can be printed.
