Application Opening: July 5, 2022
Application Deadline: July 26, 2022
Notice to Appear for Exam: September 8, 2023
Examination Date: September 23, 2023

Eligibility: This is a departmental promotional exam. Please refer to the exam poster/application for specific information.  Eligibility has already been reviewed and determined based on the original examination date of September 17, 2022

Next steps

  1. Test takers will automatically be registered to take the examination and receive email correspondence with additional information if they had initially applied and paid to take the examination on the original date of September 17, 2022.

  3. Notice to Appear for Examination:  September 8, 2023

    Two weeks before the examination date you will receive a notice to appear by email.  The notice will tell you the location and the time to appear for your examination.  Please check your junk or spam mail folder for the e-mail before contacting this office.

  4. Education & Experience (E&E) Application Deadline: September 30, 2023

    Promotional exam candidates are required to file their E&E Claims; It is a mandatory exam component and will result in a failing score on the E&E component if the claim is not completed.  Supporting documentation will be accepted up to seven calendar days following the exam date by email: civilservice@mass.gov

  5. Score Released Date: December 18th, 2023 & December 19th, 2023.

    You will receive your examination result by email.

  6. Education & Experience (E&E) Last Day to Appeal: January 4, 2024 & January 5th, 2024.
    Before filing an appeal regarding your E&E claim, please ensure that your submitted documentation supports the information referenced on your E&E claim.

  7. Eligible List Establishment Date: February 15, 2024
    When the eligible list is established, you will be able to view your rank.

Police Sergeant (1YP)
The examination weights are: 56% Technical Knowledge, 24% Situational Judgment and 20% E&E.

City/Town: Agawam, Bellingham, Belmont, Billerica, Gloucester, Ludlow, Medfield, Melrose, Middleborough, Milton, Randolph, Winchester

Police Sergeant (1YP-442)
The examination weights are: 40% Written Examination (Technical Knowledge and Situational Judgement); 40% Assessment Center; 20% E&E.

Eligible Title: Police Officer
City/Town: Beverly, Danvers, Dartmouth, Dedham, Marblehead, Needham

Police Sergeant (1YP-433)
The examination weights are: 40% Written Examination (Technical Knowledge and Situational Judgement); 30% Assessment Center; 30% E&E.

City/Town: Barnstable

Police Sergeant (3YP)
The examination weights are: 56% Technical Knowledge, 24% Situational Judgment and 20% E&E.

Police Sergeant (3YP-442)

The examination weights are: 52% Technical Knowledge, 28% Situational Judgment and 20% E&E.

The examination weights are: 48% Technical Knowledge, 32% Situational Judgment and 20% E&E.
