Eligibility: This is a departmental promotional examination. Please refer to the examination poster/application for specific information.

  3. Notice to Appear for Examination: November 3, 2023

    Two weeks before the examination date you will receive a notice to appear by email. The notice will tell you the location and the time to appear for your examination. Please check your junk or spam mail folder for the email before contacting this office.
  4. Experience/Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E) Application Deadline: November 25, 2023

    Promotional examination candidates are required to file their ECT&E Claims; It is an exam component and will result in a failing score for the ECT&E component if the claim is not completed.  Supporting documentation will be accepted up to 7 calendar days following the examination date by email: civilservice@mass.gov

  5. Score Release Date: TBD

    Your examination result will be emailed.

  6. Experience/Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E) Last Day to Appeal: TBD

    Before filing an appeal regarding your ECT&E claim, please ensure that your submitted documentation supports the information referenced on your ECT&E claim.

Deputy Fire Chief
The examination weights are: 44% Technical Knowledge, 36% Situational Judgment and 20% ECT&E.

City/Town: Brockton, Canton (postponed), Dedham, Everett, Gloucester (postponed), Holyoke, Newton, Randolph

Eligible Title: Fire Captain, Firefighter
City/Town: ChelmsfordNorth Reading

Eligible Title: Fire Lieutenant

Eligible Title: Fire Lieutenant, Firefighter

Eligible Title: District Fire Chief
City/Town: New Bedford, Plymouth

Deputy Fire Chief (1YP-442)
The examination weights are: 40& Written Examination (Technical Knowledge and Situational Judgement), 40% Assessment Center and 20% ECT&E.

Deputy Fire Chief (1YP-532)
The examination weights are: 50& Written Examination (Technical Knowledge and Situational Judgement), 30% Assessment Center and 20% ECT&E.

Deputy Fire Chief (1YP-454510)
The examination weights are: 45% Written Examination (Technical Knowledge and Situational Judgement), 45% Assessment Center and 10% ECT&E.

District Fire Chief
The examination weights are: 48% Technical Knowledge, 32% Situational Judgment and 20% ECT&E.
Eligible Title: Fire Captain
