When I call 988, where is my call routed to?
Calls to 988 are routed to local call centers by georouting, based on the area code of your phone number, or to the 988 national network in some cases.
- Georouting: if you call 988 from a cell phone using a wireless carrier that has implemented georouting, your call is automatically sent to a call center near your approximate physical location
- The routing and service providers do not receive detailed information about your exact “pinpoint” location
- Area code: if you call from a cell phone using a wireless carrier that does not have active georouting or from a landline phone, your call will be routed to the nearest call center based on the defined location of the first six digits (area code and prefix) of your phone number
- For example, if the caller’s phone number has a 617 area code, the call will be routed to the call center nearest to Boston
- National network routing: if your call is not answered locally within a set amount of time or if you choose one of the specialized services (for example, if you press 1 for veterans or 2 for the Spanish line), you may be routed to 988’s national network
In all cases: please stay on the line to be routed to the next available call center.
