About the Blynman Bridge reconstruction project

This project will improve the safety and efficiency of the bridge on Route 127 (Western Avenue) over the Blynman Canal in Gloucester, MA by removing the old bridge and constructing a new bridge.

Overview

The Blynman Bridge, also known as the Cut Bridge, carries Route 127 (Western Avenue) over the Blynman Canal in Gloucester, MA. The movable span bridge opens approximately 9,500 per year for vessels. The goal of this project is to provide a new safe and durable new movable span crossing of the Blynman Canal. The project is currently in the early design phase.

Project limits

The project limits along Route 127 (Western Avenue) extend only to the bridge span over the Blynman Canal.

Project goals

•    Replace the existing bridge with a new durable bridge 
•    Maximize resiliency and operational reliability
•    Provide safe passage for vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic 
•    Provide access through the Blynman Canal for all marine traffic users
•    Minimize movable bridge open and close cycle duration
•    Minimize impacts on properties (residences, businesses, parkland, etc.)
•    Avoid impacts on the existing seawalls
