About the Route 20 reconstruction project in Charlton & Oxford

The project goal is to improve the safety of Route 20 in Charlton and Oxford.

Overview

MassDOT has redesigned and reconstructed Route 20 in Charlton and Oxford to improve safety and traffic operations. Changes include:

  • Roadway widening
  • Introduction of sidewalks and shared use paths
  • Implementation of a median barrier separating opposing directions of travel
  • Enhanced traffic operations at intersections
  • Replacement of bridges over the Little River in Charlton and the French River in Oxford
  • Installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 20 and Oxbow Road
  • Introduction of Best Management Practices to enhance stormwater treatment

The design includes:

  • Bicycle and pedestrian accommodations
  • Signage
  • Pavement markings
  • Guardrail
  • Retaining walls
  • Storm drainage
  • Overhead and underground utility relocations

MassDOT selected a Design-Builder Team, D.W. White Construction Inc. and TranSystems, who is handling both the design and construction. This reduces the time needed to complete the project and promotes collaboration among the engineers, contractor, and MassDOT staff.
