The existing culvert, Bridge No. S-01-001, was constructed in 1950 and is at the end of its useful life. It has been classified as structurally deficient, is in poor condition according to the 2025 Culvert Inspection Report and needs replacement. MassDOT is carrying out this project with the following goals:
- Improve structural integrity and hydraulic capacity of the culvert while maintaining multimodal connections for all roadway users.
- Enhance the regional connectivity within the project area.
- Improve local connections to the recreational and transit facilities adjacent to the project site.
Current and future flooding conditions are expected to continue deteriorating the existing culvert. Pedestrian and bicycle accommodations at the culvert also do not comply with current MassDOT standards.
MassDOT and HNTB completed Project Development and Pre-25% Design in May 2026 and are seeking input from the community members, stakeholders, and local organizations as they proceed to 25% Design.
