About the Springfield Armory Street bridge replacement project

The Springfield Armory Street Bridge Replacement Project will reconstruct two aging bridges on Armory Street.

Background

Both bridges were constructed in 1934. MassDOT inspects the bridges routinely every two years to check for deterioration. Through these inspections, MassDOT has identified that the girders and the deck need to be replaced. One bridge carries Armory Street over an active CSX freight rail line and the other bridge goes over an out-of-service CSX railway.

Project benefits

This project will:

  • Replace the structurally deficient bridges
  • Mill and pave the Armory Street/ Genesee Street/ Warwick Street intersection
  • Improve the turning radius for commercial vehicles on Albany Street
  • Widen the Armory Street Corridor between Warwick Street and Taylor Street to accommodate a new share use path

Schedule and process

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026 and be completed in 2028. Construction will be completed in two stages. The western side of the road will be constructed first and the eastern side will be constructed second. In both stages, one-lane of traffic will be maintained (southbound direction). Temporary signals will allow for two-way use by emergency vehicles only.

For northbound traffic, separate detours for car and truck traffic will be in place.  This detour will be maintained for both stages of construction.
