Adviser - Individual & Corporate

Insurance Advisers provide insurance advice or consulting services for compensation. Unlike Insurance Producers, Advisers do not sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance policies unless separately licensed to do so.

Individual Insurance Adviser License

To qualify for an Insurance Adviser license, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be trustworthy and competent
  • Have not had an insurance license revoked or suspended
  • Pass the required Massachusetts Public Insurance Adviser examination. Both resident and non-resident applicants must pass the examination.

Note: If your application requires supporting documentation, , proof of U.S. citizenship, or documents related to "Yes" responses to background questions (including a signed explanation and any final court or administrative records), please upload the required documents to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse when you apply. If you have already applied without uploading them, please submit the documents as soon as possible and email producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov after uploading, as the Division is not automatically notified when documents are added to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse.

Adviser Contract Requirements

All Insurance Advisers must use a written adviser contract approved by the Commissioner of Insurance. Individual advisers may not use an employer's adviser contract. The contract must be in writing, clearly describe the services being provided, state the fee charged to the client, and be signed by both the adviser and the client. Both parties must receive a signed copy of the contract. Any changes to an approved contract must be submitted to the Commissioner for approval before the updated contract may be used.

Apply Through NIPR

Submit your application through NIPR and upload your adviser contract for review.  Applications will not be approved until the adviser contract has been reviewed and approved.
