Description

Agawam Mill Pond is a 145-acre impoundment of the Agawam River located in Wareham. Agawam Mill Pond has an average depth of 4 feet, a maximum depth of 13 feet and aquatic vegetation is common throughout the body of the lake. A portion on the northern shoreline where Maple Springs Brook enters the pond falls within the Maple Springs Brook Wildlife Management Area.

Recreational access

MassWildlife manages a concrete boat ramp suitable for trailered craft at the intersection of the Cranberry Highway (Route 6) and Route 28 in Wareham (get directions). Parking for approximately 10 trailers and 6 cars is available at the ramp and shore fishing is also possible. An additional cartop boat and shore fishing access point is provided at Whitlock's Landing located off of Glen Charlie Rd. (get directions) This property is owned and managed by the Wareham Land Trust with public access secured through a MassWildlife held conservation easement; there is parking for approximately 10 cars. Please contact the Southeast District Offices of MassWildlife or the Wareham Land Trust for additional information, fee structure, and/or restrictions pertaining to public access of Agawam Mill Pond.

Fish populations

The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:

  • largemouth bass
  • smallmouth bass
  • chain pickerel
  • common carp
  • bowfin
  • black crappie
  • yellow perch
  • white perch
  • brown bullhead
  • pumpkinseed
  • bluegill
  • American eel
  • white sucker
  • banded sunfish
  • banded killifish
  • alewive
  • blueback herring

Fishing

Agawam Mill Pond has an outstanding bass fishery with a reputation for consistently producing trophy size fish. Additionally, Agawam Mill Pond hosts spawning and rearing alewives and herring seasonally which bolsters its forage base likely contributing to its overall productivity. While the majority of bass encountered will be largemouth, smallmouth are also present. Agawam Mill Pond has produced largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, common carp, black crappie, white perch, yellow perch, bullhead and sunfish that meet the minimum size for recognition by the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program.
