Alert for FIFA tourists and travelers on DCR River Road Height Restrictions

Welcome to Boston and the 2026 FIFA World Cup!

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) welcomes you to Boston and wishes you an enjoyable stay during the FIFA World Cup 2026TM.  DCR stewards one of the largest, most diverse state park systems in the country. We hope you get an opportunity to enjoy these unique and beautiful places during your visit.

If you are driving a large truck, box truck, bus, large van, or other oversized vehicle, please be aware that Storrow Drive and Soldiers Field Road in Boston, as well as Memorial Drive in Cambridge, are not open to trucks, buses, moving vans, or other oversized vehicles and have bridge clearances as low as nine feet.

Trucks, vans, buses, and box trucks exceeding these height limits risk becoming stuck beneath the overpasses. Each year, Massachusetts State Police Troopers respond to multiple incidents involving oversized vehicles that become lodged under bridges or drivers who realize too late that their vehicles will not fit and must be carefully backed out of an overpass, causing significant traffic delays and safety concerns.

Before traveling, drivers are encouraged to check whether bridges along their route can accommodate the height of their vehicle, seek alternative routes when necessary, and observe all posted height restrictions, warning signs, and electronic message boards. Alternative routes for oversized vehicles may include Beacon Street, Commonwealth Avenue, and the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Please note that GPS and many navigation apps do not account for the size or height of a vehicle.  Drivers of trucks, buses and large vans should consider using navigation tools designed for oversized vehicles, which provide routing based on vehicle dimensions and road restrictions.

Thank you for helping keep our roadways safe and traffic moving smoothly. We wish you a safe, enjoyable visit and a memorable World Cup experience in Massachusetts.
