Info for mental health and human service candidates

What are the licensing requirements?

The requirements are found in the Rules and Regulations section.

Is an examination a prerequisite for licensing?

Yes, all licenses require a specific examination.

What are the required exams and when are exams held?

 Mental Health Counselors (LMHC):
The National Board of Clinical Counselors (NBCC) National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE) is required for the LMHC license.  Exams are administered during a one-week period each month.  Please review the registration materials for the specific dates for this year.  Pre-approval by the Board is NOT required to take this examination.  Please see https://www.nbcc.org/ for more information.

Applied Behavior Analysts and Assistant Applied Behavior Analysts:
All applicants must pass the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to become licensed.

Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT):
The Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards National Marital and Family Therapy Examination is required for LMFT.  Exams are administered three times per year during specified testing windows.  Specific information on the exam and the current testing windows can be found at www.amftrb.org.  You must submit an application demonstrating completion of all education and pre-master's experience, along with an official transcript, to be approved to sit for the exam.  Post-master’s experience is not required to seek approval to sit for the examination.  

Rehabilitation Counselors:
The Rehabilitation Counselor examination is the national exam administered by the Commission for Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC).  Exams are administered three times a year during specified testing windows.  Specific information on the exam, current testing windows, as well as registration materials, can be found at www.crccertification.com.  Pre-approval by the Board is NOT required to take this examination.  If you are already a nationally certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC), you do not need to re-take the exam.

Educational Psychologists (LEP):
The National School Psychology Examination of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), administered by Education Testing Service (ETS), is required for the LEP.  Specific information on the exam, current testing windows, as well as registration materials, can be found at Educational Testing Service.  Pre-approval by the Board is NOT required to take this examination.

When does each license expire?

December 31 of every odd-numbered year.

How many hours of Continuing Education (CE) are needed to renew a license?

30 hours of approved CE are due by December 31 of each odd-numbered year.  Please see the Board’s CE policies for more information.
