June 2025

What's new

In June 2025, the project contractor is scheduled to perform the following activities:

  • Continuing utility work within the in-field areas of the interchange next to the Route 9 and Route 27 ramps.
  • Resuming tree and vegetation clearing on Route 27 between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road, and on Route 9 between the Cochituate Rail Trail and Lupine Road.

In June 2025, Eversource will also begin conducting utility relocation in the project area. Activities include:

  • Utility pole installation at various locations between MetroWest Subaru Dealership and Lupine Road, through June 2025.
  • Gas line relocation along eastbound Route 9, starting at the Metrowest Subaru Dealership, and proceeding eastbound along Route 9 on weeknights through the Spring of 2026.

Travel impacts

Over the next two weeks, intermittent lane closures are anticipated for early construction work, tree and vegetation removal, and Eversource Gas and Electric work. These temporary lane closures include:

  • Nightly right lane intermittent lane closures on Route 9 eastbound, between the MetroWest Subaru Dealership and Park Avenue, 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM, Sunday - Thursday.
  • Nightly intermittent lane closures along Route 27, between North Pleasant Street and Rutledge Road, 10:00 PM- 5:00 AM, Sunday - Thursday. Daytime work will occur along Route 27, with both directions of traffic maintained, from 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
  • The below diagram shows the anticipated locations for scheduled work activity.

Work schedules are subject to change in the event of inclement weather. Work hours are anticipated and subject to change in the event of unforeseen site conditions.

Route 9

Eversource electric utility pole installation
  • Eversource Electric is expected to continue work on utility poles along Route 9, in the shoulders of eastbound Route 9 and along the sidewalk. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Work will be completed during the day, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
Eversource gas main work
  • Eversource Gas is scheduled to begin work to relocate the main gas line on Route 9 eastbound beginning Sunday, June 1, 2025, and continuing on weeknights intermittently through the Spring of 2026Right lane intermittent lane closures will be in effect on Route 9 eastbound nightly, 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM, Sunday - Thursday.
Tree and vegetation removal
  • Tree and vegetation removal is scheduled to take place along Route 9 eastbound and westbound, beginning Monday, June 9, 2025. Intermittent lane closures will be in effect on Route 9 in both directions nightly 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM, Sunday -Thursday.

Route 27

Early construction activities
  • Utility duct bank installation is scheduled to continue in the south in-field areas of the interchange, along the eastbound Route 9 loop on-ramp and along Route 27, with traffic maintained on Route 27, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
Tree and vegetation removal
  • Tree and vegetation removal will take place along Route 27 north of Route 9, expected to begin Monday, June 9, 2025, through Friday, July 11, 2025. Intermittent lane closures will be in place along Route 27 nightly 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM, Sunday - Thursday, and work will take place daily, from 7 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, without impacting traffic.

  • Tree and vegetation removal, Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Eversource Electric Utility Pole Installation, Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Typical nighttime work hours:

  • Eversource Gas Work and Tree and Vegetation Removal, Sunday - Thursday, 10:00 PM - 5:00 AM

Travel Tips

  • Detours and traffic impacts will be posted on our website and be included in these email notifications.
  • Drivers should pay attention to all signage and move carefully through the work zone. Police details, lane markings, temporary barriers, traffic cones, signage, and other tools will be used to control traffic and maintain safe work zones.

May 2025

Utility Work

The project contractor is scheduled to start the installation of a utility duct bank in the southwest in-field area next to the eastbound Route 9 loop on-ramp. Activities include excavation, trenching, duct bank installation, material deliveries, exporting material, staging of construction equipment, backfill, and grading. This work is occurring as part of required utility relocation for the roadway reconstruction of Route 9 for the project.

•    The duct bank work is anticipated to start on Monday, May 5, 2025, and continue intermittently on weekdays, Monday - Friday, through the end of 2025. Work hours are 7 AM - 3:30 PM.
•    Work schedules are subject to change in the event of inclement weather.
•    Additional construction advisories will be provided for any schedule changes or impacts to traffic.
•    Pedestrian access and access to driveways will be maintained. 
•    The duct bank installation work will occur within the in-field area of the interchange, between Route 27, eastbound Route 9, and the eastbound Route 9 loop on-ramp, as shown in the below diagram.

May 2025 update

What's new

  • The project contractor is scheduled to continue the installation of a utility duct bank across the eastbound Route 9 loop on-ramp. Work hours are 8:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m., and nightly closures of the southbound Route 27 to eastbound Route 9 on-ramp, are anticipated from 10:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.
  • The work is scheduled on the following nights:
    • Sunday, May 18, 2025
    • Wednesday, May 21, 2025
    • Thursday, May 22, 2025
  • This work is being performed at night due to the required nightly closure of the southbound Route 27 to eastbound Route 9 on-ramp. This closure will be set and removed at the start and end of each nightly work shift.
  • The signed detour for this work will direct traffic from southbound Route 27, to the westbound Route 9 on-ramp, continuing on Route 9 to exit at Speen Street, to the eastbound Route 9 on-ramp from Speen Street. Please find the diagram under Travel Impacts that shows the detour.
  • Utility duct bank work is scheduled to continue within the interchange along the eastbound Route 9 loop on-ramp, without impacting traffic, on weekdays, from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Activities include excavation, trenching, duct bank installation, material deliveries, exporting material, and staging of construction equipment.

Coming soon!

  • The contractor anticipates to resume tree and vegetation clearing along Route 9 between the Cochituate Rail Trail and Linden Street, and on Route 27, between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road, after Memorial Day Weekend.
  • Eversource Gas expects to start the gas line installation along eastbound Route 9, between the MetroWest Subaru dealership and Linden Street in June 2025, starting from west of the interchange and continuing east. Work is scheduled at night, from 9:00 p.m.– 5:00 a.m., due to the need for lane closures on Route 9.
  • Additional schedule, work hour, and location details will be provided in future advisories and coordinated with individual properties.

Travel impacts

  • The below diagram shows the eastbound Route 9 on-ramp detour utilizing Speen Street, anticipated nightly, 10:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m., on May 18, May 21, and May 22.
  • Access for emergency response vehicles will be maintained.

April 2025

Eversource Energy Utility Work - Rescheduled

Eversource Energy is scheduled to perform the installation of utility poles at the interchange of Route 9 and Route 27 and along eastbound Route 9 between the MetroWest Subaru dealership and Linden Street. Activities include off-loading and storing utility poles in the staging areas at the Route 27 and Route 9 interchange and the installation of utility poles along eastbound Route 9.

  • RESCHEDULED - Eversource Gas has rescheduled the weeknight gas line installation along eastbound Route 9 to start in June 2025. Additional construction advisories will be provided in advance of the work starting.
  • At the Route 27 and Route 9 interchange, work will occur in the staging areas off of eastbound Route 9 next to the Route 27 bridge.
  • On Route 9, work will occur in the shoulders of eastbound Route 9, between the Cochituate Rail Trail bridge, and Linden Street, and next to the the eastbound Route 9 ramps.
  • Pedestrian access and access to driveways will be maintained.  
  • This work is planned in stages, as described below, and as shown in the map diagram with locations of each stage.
    • Stage 1: Work occurs on eastbound Route 9 adjacent to the Route 27 bridge.
    • Stage 2: Work occurs on eastbound Route 9, east of Route 27, continuing to Linden Street.
    • Stage 3: Work occurs on eastbound Route 9, west of Route 27.

March, 2025

Utility Investigation and Roadway Maintenance Work

To facilitate design and upcoming utility relocation work, the contractor is scheduled to perform utility investigation work. In addition, the contractor will perform roadway maintenance work, including repairs to potholes, and install advanced traffic warning signage in the project area. This work is anticipated to start as early as March 5, 2025, and continue intermittently on weeknights through March 21, 2025. Work hours are 10 PM – 5 PM. The following impacts to traffic are anticipated:

  • On Route 9, work is expected to occur in the shoulders, between the Cochituate Rail Trail bridge, and Linden Street, and on the Route 9 ramps.
  • On Route 27, work will occur on the Route 27 ramps, and intermittent lane closures are expected between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road.
  • Pedestrian access, access for emergency vehicles, and access to driveways will be maintained.

February 2025

Route 27 and Route 9 Tree and Vegetation Removal

What is Happening?

  • Crews are scheduled to start tree and vegetation clearing within the project limits and on impacted properties that directly abut the project. This includes areas within the Route 27 and Route 9 interchange, along Route 27 between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road, and along Route 9 between the Cochituate Rail Trail bridge and Linden Street.
  • The work in the landscaped interchange areas is anticipated to start in February 2025, and the work at individual properties is anticipated to start in March 2025.
  • Individual property owners who are affected by this work will be contacted directly by the project team.

Why is this Work Happening?

  • Tree and vegetation removal is a critical initial step to prepare the project limits for construction of the new Route 27 bridges, roadway reconstruction on Route 27 and Route 9, and construction of the pedestrian and cyclist shared-use path network.

When?

  • The work in the landscaped interchange areas is scheduled to start Monday, February 10, 2025, and continue on weekdays through early-March 2025.
  • The work at individual properties is anticipated to start at a later date in March 2025. Additional notifications with specific schedule information will be issued.
  • Work will not take place on Presidents Day, February 17, 2025.
  • Work hours are 7 AM - 3:30 PM.
  • This schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather.

How Will this Affect You?

  • Work is expected to occur in the shoulders, along walkways, and off the roadway within the existing interchange:
    • on Route 9, between the Cochituate Rail Trail bridge, and Linden Street
    • on Route 27, between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road.
  • On Route 27, intermittent lane closures are expected between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road.
  • Pedestrian access, property access, and access to driveways will be maintained.

January, 2025

Utility Investigation and Boring Work

To facilitate design and upcoming utility relocation work, the contractor is scheduled to perform utility investigation and boring work. This work is anticipated to start as early as January 20, 2025, and continue on weekdays through February 14, 2025. Work hours are 7 AM – 3 PM. The following impacts to traffic are anticipated:

  • On Route 9, work is expected to occur in the shoulders, between the Cochituate Rail Trail bridge, and Linden Street.
  • On Route 27, intermittent lane closures are expected between Bacon Street and Rutledge Road.
  • Pedestrian access and access to driveways will be maintained.

Route 27 Bridge over Route 9 Maintenance Work

As part of ongoing maintenance work for the Route 27 bridge over Route 9, the contractor is scheduled to repair bridge netting used for debris containment. This work is scheduled to start January 12, 2025, and continue through January 16, 2025. Work hours are 10:00 PM – 5:00 AM. The following traffic impacts are anticipated:

•    On Route 9, intermittent lane closures are expected to occur between the Cochituate Rail Trail bridge and Linden Street.

Additional updates will be provided for upcoming tree and vegetation removal within the project limits, which is expected to also take place this Winter 2024.

When winter storms are forecasted, work zones will be removed to facilitate MassDOT and municipality snow and ice operations.
