Continuity of Care

Help when you change plans

When changing from one plan to the other, MassHealth members have a “continuity of care” period.

The goal of the continuity of care period is to make sure you get your care without interruptions. During this period, you may keep seeing any doctors, nurses and other providers in your old plan who you’ve been working with. These providers do not have to be part of your new health plan. Your new plan will recognize any prior authorizations (approvals) you already have.  This includes any current drug prescriptions.

What to do if you have concerns during this time

  • Contact your new plan. Ask them how long continuity of care lasts. You should let your new plan know about any visits you have planned with your providers. You should also tell them about any hospitalizations that have been scheduled and authorized and any prescription drugs you are taking.
Your new plan can let you know if you can still see your current providers after the continuity of care period. They can also help you find new providers, if needed, and help you with any prior authorizations. (A prior authorization is an approval you have or need from your health plan
  • Call MassHealth Customer Services at (800) 841-2900, TDD/TTY:711. If you have a provider you like and want to stay with, MassHealth can help you find that provider and change plans to stay with that provider. You should also call MassHealth if you have an urgent situation that is not being addressed by your new plan.
