Description

Curlew Pond is a 46-acre kettlehole pond located in the northwest corner of Myles Standish State Park in Plymouth. Curlew Pond has an average depth of 13 feet, a maximum depth of 33 feet and the waters are often transparent to 12 feet or more. The pond bottom is composed of rubble, sand and muck and aquatic vegetation is rare. A Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) campground is located on the northern and western shores with a few residential houses on the southern shore. 

Recreational access

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages a small cartop ramp off Curlew Pond Road on the north shore (get directions). The shoreline is accessible via trails emanating from the launch area. Street parking is available on Curlew Pond Road during the off season, but it is prohibited from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Please contact DCR offices of Myles Standish State Forest for additional information, fee structure, and/or restrictions pertaining to public access of Curlew Pond.

Fish populations

The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:

  • largemouth bass
  • smallmouth bass
  • chain pickerel
  • black crappie
  • yellow perch
  • white perch
  • pumpkinseed
  • bluegill
  • banded killifish
  • banded sunfish
  • brown bullhead
  • golden shiner

Fishing

With its remote setting, Curlew Pond is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The pond is known to occasionally produce exceptionally large bluegill. Curlew Pond has produced largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie, chain pickerel, bullhead, and sunfish that meet the minimum size for recognition by the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program.
