DCR Public Access Electric Charging Program
The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is launching the Public Access Electric Vehicle Charging Program to help expand access to electric vehicle (EV) charging across the Massachusetts. This initiative will help Massachusetts build a statewide network of charging stations by installing stations at DCR facilities that already act as hubs for residents and visitors throughout the year.
This program is focusing on:
- Developing a strategic plan for public EV charging at DCR locations
- Designing, permitting, and installing charging stations at priority locations as funding allows.
- Implementing a maintenance plan to ensure long-term reliability
- Providing public education and outreach on EV adoption
Why This Matters
Massachusetts is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with targets to cut transportation-related emissions by 18% by 2025, 34% by 2030, and 86% by 2050 (MA 2050 CECP). The Advanced Clean Car II Rules will require that an increasing percentage of new light-duty vehicles be electric—reaching 100% by 2035. To support this transition, a reliable and widespread charging network is essential.
DCR’s vast network of parks, forests, beaches, and recreational facilities—spanning 500,000 acres across Massachusetts—already serves as a gathering place for millions of residents and visitors. By adding publicly accessible EV charging stations, DCR will help ensure that everyone, including those in rural and low-to-moderate income communities, has the confidence to drive electric.
