Dog training, field trials, & hunt tests on WMAs

If you want to hold field trials on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) or release birds for dog training, you must first apply for a permit from MassWildlife.

Dog training on WMAs

The simplest form of dog training is using bumpers or dummies with scent added, and a blank pistol or shotgun. This activity can be done at any time on any WMA without a permit. Both of these training shells are available at gun dog supply stores.

Dogs may be off-leash on WMAs only when hunting or hunt training with licensed hunters or involved with permitted field trials. Dog feces in WMA parking areas and within 100 feet of the parking area must be picked up by all dog handlers and disposed of off the WMA. Dog feces in other parts of the WMA must be picked up by non-licensed dog handlers and disposed of offsite; licensed hunters are exempt from this requirement.

Field trials and hunt test permits

To hold a field trial or hunt test on a Wildlife Management Area, you must first apply for a Field Trial/Hunt Test Permit. MassWildlife’s District Managers are available for a consultation to understand your event and will make recommendations on properties that best suit your organization’s needs. Be aware that timing restrictions may be in place for certain properties to protect wildlife and habitat, such as bird nesting season closures. If granted, the permit will include specific instructions on staffing requirements, fees, and other permits that may be required for importation and liberation of game birds. Contact your nearest MassWildlife District Office to apply.

Special winter gamebird hunting season

Licensed hunters may apply to MassWildlife for a free 1-day permit that allows the private purchase, liberation, and hunting of ring-necked pheasants and/or bobwhite quail on the select WMAs from January 1 through March 31 annually (excluding Sundays).

WMAs include:

  • Frances A. Crane WMA and Erwin Wilder WMA (Southeast District)
  • Bolton Flats WMA and Winnimusset WMA (Central District)
  • Martin Burns WMA (Northeast District)
  • Herm Covey WMA (Connecticut Valley District)
  • Housatonic Valley WMA (Western District)

Hunts may be permitted on other WMAs at the discretion of the District Manager. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no stocking limits or bag limits. Contact the appropriate MassWildlife District Office to apply.

Birds that are purchased in-state must be purchased from a licensed game bird propagator in Massachusetts. An importation permit from MassWildlife is required if purchasing and importing game birds from out of state.
